Root Canal Treatment in Mohali & Chandigarh

Root canal treatment removes infected or inflamed pulp from inside a tooth, so the tooth can be saved instead of taken out.

What is a root canal?

Inside each tooth is the pulp, which holds its nerves and blood vessels. Deep decay, a crack or an injury can let bacteria reach the pulp, causing infection and pain. In root canal treatment the pulp is removed, and the canals are cleaned, disinfected and sealed.

Signs you may need one

  • Pain that lingers after something hot or cold
  • Toothache when biting or chewing
  • Swelling or a small pimple on the gum near a tooth
  • A tooth that has darkened in colour

Some infected teeth cause no pain at all and are found on an X-ray, which is one reason for regular check-ups.

How the treatment works

  1. Diagnosis: an examination and X-ray of the tooth.
  2. Anaesthesia: the tooth is numbed with a local anaesthetic.
  3. Cleaning: the infected pulp is removed and the canals are cleaned and shaped.
  4. Sealing: the canals are filled and sealed, and the tooth is closed with a filling.
  5. Crown: a back tooth usually needs a crown afterwards to protect it.

Treatment usually takes one or two visits.

Aftercare

The tooth may feel tender for a few days. Avoid chewing hard food on it until the final filling or crown is in place, and keep brushing and flossing as usual.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is root canal treatment painful?

The tooth is numbed with local anaesthesia, so the treatment itself should feel much like having a filling. It usually relieves the pain the infection was causing.

How many visits does it take?

Usually one or two. A tooth with a severe infection may need an extra visit.

Why do I need a crown after a root canal?

A treated back tooth becomes more brittle and can crack when you bite. A crown protects it so it lasts.

Can antibiotics treat the infection instead?

Antibiotics can reduce swelling for a while, but they cannot remove the infection inside the tooth. Without treatment it usually comes back.
